DTC P242B Exhaust Gas Temperature (EGT) Sensor 3 PerformanceDescription
The exhaust gas temperature (EGT) sensor 3 is installed to the front chamber of SCR catalyst housing and it measures the temperature of the exhaust gas in the front of SCR catalyst.
The intake air temperature (IAT) sensor 1 is fitted between the air cleaner and turbocharger and it measures the temperature of the air entering to the engine. The intake air temperature 1 signal to the DEF control module is sent from the engine control module (ECM) via a controller area network (CAN) communication bus.
The DEF control module monitors temperature difference from both temperature inputs continuously. If the DEF control module detects that both inputs are not within a specified temperature of each other, this DTC will set.
Condition for Running the DTC
At the last driving cycle
- The engine speed is greater than 1,000 RPM for 10 minutes.
- The engine coolant temperature is more than 140 °F (60 °C).
At the current driving cycle
- DTCs P060B, P242C, P242D and U0100 are not set.
- DTCs P0097, P0098 and P111F are not set in the ECM. (3.0L 4JJ1)
- The battery voltage is between 10 to 16 volts.
- The ignition switch is ON.
- The difference of maximum and minimum intake air temperature 1 is less than 50 °F (10 °C).
- The difference of maximum and minimum engine coolant temperature is less than 50 °F (10 °C).
Condition for Setting the DTC
- The DEF control module detects that the temperature difference between the exhaust temperature 3 and the intake air temperature 1 is more than 108 °F (60 °C) for 3 seconds. (3.0L 4JJ1)
Action Taken When the DTC Sets
- The DEF control module requests the ECM to illuminate the MIL on the second consecutive driving cycle. Refer to DTC Type Definitions for Action Taken When the DTC Sets - Type B.
- The DEF control module and the ECM apply defaulted warning actions. Refer to Default Action and Fail- Safe List.
Conditions for Clearing the DTC
- Conditions for Clearing the DTC
Conditions for Clearing the DTC
- If an intermittent condition is suspected, refer to Intermittent Conditions in this section.
- Use the Temperature vs. Resistance table to test the EGT sensor 3 at various temperature levels to evaluate the possibility of a skewed sensor.
