Tie Rod: Description and Operation
Tie Rod Description- There are two tie rod assemblies.
Each tie rod assembly consists of the following components:
+ Sleeve
+ Two clamps
+ Two tie rod ends
- The two tie rod ends are threaded into the sleeve and secured with the clamps.
- The right and left hand threads are used for the following components:
+ Toe-in adjustments
+ Steering gear centering
- Before any service is performed, note the following items:
+ Position of the tie rod adjuster tube
+ Direction from which the bolts are installed
+ The tie rod adjuster components may be rusted.
- If the torque required to remove the nut from the bolt exceeds 9 N.m (62 lb in), perform the following steps:
+ Replace the nuts.
+ Rotate the clamps until they move freely.
- Install all parts, with the correct part number, in the proper position.
- All of the procedures for the following items apply to the left and the right sides:
+ Alignment
+ Adjustment
+ Assembly
