Locating Fluid Leaks
External Leakage CheckPerform the following procedure to help identify the exact location of the leak:
1. Turn the engine off.
2. Wipe dry all the power steering system components.
3. Wipe dry all the power steering system connections.
4. Check the fluid reservoir
5. Add fluid if required.
6. The bleed the power steering system if the reservoir is empty. Refer to Service and Repair; Maintenance; Bleeding Power Steering System.
7. Start the engine.
8. Have an assistant turn the steering wheel from stop to stop several times while you search for leaks. Do not hold it at a stop for any length of time or damage to the pump may occur.
9. Find the exact location of the leak.
10. Repair the leak.
Power Steering Gear and Pump Leaks
1. Inspect the fluid level and inspect the fluid condition.
2. Do not run the vehicle if the fluid reservoir is empty. Prolonged usage without fluid will damage the pump.
3. Fluid other than what is recommended can damage the seals.
4. Ensure that no dirt, brake fluid, engine oil or any other contaminant other than the recommended fluid is present.
5. It may be necessary to perform the following if other fluid is evident:
1. Completely disassemble the pump.
2. Completely disassemble the gear.
3. Clean the pump.
4. Clean the gear.
5. Flush the power steering system.
6. Clean all the suspected areas thoroughly before inspecting if the leak is not obvious.
7. Inspect the pump.
8. Inspect the gear.
9. Inspect the hoses for cuts.
10. Inspect the hoses for loose clamps.
11. Inspect the hoses for loose fittings at the pump.
12. Inspect the hoses for loose fittings at the gear.
13. The point where fluid is dripping is not necessarily the point where the system is leaking. Identify the exact point of the leak. Refer to External Leakage Check.
