Removal and Installation
Removal ProcedureCAUTION: When you are performing service on or near the SRS components or the SRS wiring, you must disable the SRS system. Refer to Disabling the SRS. Failure to follow the correct procedure could cause air bag deployment, personal injury, or unnecessary SRS repairs.
CAUTION: Refer to SIR Handling Caution in Service Precautions.
1. Disable the SRS system. Refer to Disabling the SRS.
2. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position to unlock the steering wheel.
3. Turn the steering wheel 90 degrees from the straight-ahead position in order to gain access to the access holes behind the steering wheel.
4. Insert a screwdriver into each access hole and push the leaf spring to release the pin that retains the inflator module.
5. Turn the steering wheel 180 degrees to gain access to the remaining access holes.
6. Insert a screwdriver into each access hole and push the leaf spring to release the pin that retains the inflator module.
7. Tilt the top of the inflator module rearward to gain access to the SRS wiring.
8. Disconnect the SRS lead wire from the clip on the inflator module.
9. Disconnect the SRS lead wire from the clip on the steering wheel.
10. Disconnect the connector position assurance (CPA) retainer.
11. Disconnect the electrical connector.
12. Remove the inflator module from the vehicle.
CAUTION: When you are carrying an undeployed inflator module:
- Do not carry the inflator module by the wires or connector on the inflator module.
- Make sure the bag opening points away from you.
When you are storing an undeployed inflator module, make sure the bag opening points away from the surface on which the inflator rests. When you are storing a steering column, do not rest the column with the bag opening facing down and the column vertical. Provide free space for the air bag to expand in case of an accidental deployment. Otherwise, personal injury may result.
Installation Procedure
1. Connect the electrical connector and the CPA retainer.
2. Connect the inflator module.
3. Connect the electrical connector.
4. Connect the SRS lead wire to the clip on the steering wheel.
5. Connect the SRS lead wire to the clip on the inflator module.
Important: Make sure that the SRS wires do not get pinched during installation of the inflator module.
6. Install the inflator module by pressing the inflator module firmly onto the steering wheel to engage and latch the leaf springs on the four notched Pins.
7. Enable the SRS system. Refer to Enabling the SRS.
