Balance Shaft: Service and Repair

Balance Shaft Replacement

Removal Procedure

1. Remove the radiator.
2. Remove the A/C condenser, if equipped.
3. Remove the lower intake manifold.
4. Remove the valve lifter pushrod guide.




5. Remove the camshaft timing chain and sprockets.




6. Remove the balance shaft drive gear.




7. Remove the bolt holding the balance shaft driven gear.
8. Remove the balance shaft driven gear.




9. Remove the bolts and the balance shaft retainer.

Important: The balance shaft and the balance shaft front bearing are serviced only as a package. Do not remove the balance shaft front bearing from the balance shaft




10. Tap on the balance shaft using a soft-faced hammer in order to remove the balance shaft.
11. Clean all sealing surfaces.

Installation Procedure

1. Install the balance shaft.




2. Install the camshaft timing chain and the camshaft sprocket.




3. Install the crankshaft position reluctor ring and the engine front cover.
4. Install the valve lifter pushrod guide.

Important: When the timing marks on the camshaft and the crankshaft sprocket are aligned, the engine is at top dead center for cylinder number four. In order to install the distributor align the crankshaft balancer marks with the engine front cover marks for top dead center cylinder number one.

5. Install the lower intake manifold.
6. Install the A/C condenser, if equipped.
7. Install the radiator.
