Camshaft: Service and Repair
Camshaft ReplacementRemoval Procedure
Important: The oil pan requires removal in order to remove the engine front cover. For a RWD vehicle remove the engine. Refer to Engine; Service and Repair; Replacement; and start on step six.
1. Disconnect the battery negative cable.
2. Remove the air cleaner assembly.
3. Drain the cooling system.
4. Remove the condenser. if equipped.
5. Remove the radiator.
6. Remove the valve rocker arm covers.
7. Remove the intake manifold.
8. Remove the valve lifters and the valve pushrods.
9. Remove the engine front cover.
10. Remove the crankshaft position sensor reluctor ring.
11. Remove the camshaft timing chain and the camshaft sprocket.
12. Remove the balance shaft drive gear.
13. Remove the camshaft.
Installation Procedure
Important:
Whenever a new camshaft is installed, do the following procedures:
- Change the engine oil.
- Change the engine oil filter.
- Add oil suppjement to the engine oil.
1. Install the camshaft into the engine block.
2. Position the drive gear onto the camshaft.
- Ensure that the timing marks align.
- The number four cylinder will be at the top dead center of its compression stroke.
3. Line up the timing marks on the camshaft sprocket and the crankshaft sprocket dot to dot. When these dots are lined up dot to dot, the number four cylinder is at the top dead center of its compression stroke.
4. Install the camshaft timing chain and camshaft sprocket.
Notice: Failure to properly align the crankshaft position sensor reluctor ring may result in component damage and effect OBD II system performance.
5. Install the crankshaft position sensor reluctor ring.
6. Install the valve lifters and the valve pushrods.
7. Install the engine front cover.
8. Install the intake manifold.
Important: Rotate the engine to align the crankshaft balancer marks with the front cover marks for cylinder number one top dead center. When the alignment marks on the camshaft sprocket and the crankshaft sprocket are aligned the engine is at cylinder number four top dead center.
9. Rotate the engine to align the crankshaft balancer marks (1) and (4) with the engine front cover marks (2) and (3) for cylinder number one top dead center.
10. Install the distributor.
11. Install the valve rocker arm covers.
12. Install the condenser, if equipped.
13. Install the radiator.
14. Fill the engine cooling system.
15. Recharge the air conditioning system, if equipped.
16. Install the air cleaner assembly.
17. Connect the battery negative cable.
