Brake Pedal Assy: Testing and Inspection
Brake Pedal Travel
Tools Required
J 28662 Brake Pedal Effort Gauge
Inspect the brake pedal travel at frequent intervals. Brake pedal travel is the distance the brake pedal moves toward the floor from a fully released position. Inspect the brake pedal travel when the brakes are cold. Use the J 28662.
1. Turn the engine OFF.
2. Press and release the brake pedal 5 times in order to exhaust the vacuum from the vacuum booster.
3. Measure the distance from the bottom of the steering wheel to the brake pedal with the brake pedal released.
4. Apply about 455 N (100 lbs) on the brake pedal. Use the J 28662.
5. Measure the distance again.
6. Subtract the first measurement from the second measurement.
7. If the brake pedal travel is more than 42 mm (1.7 in), refer to Antilock Brake System; Testing and Inspection; Procedures; Diagnostic Stratagies.
