Manual Transmission/Transaxle: Service and Repair

1. On models equipped with airbag system, refer to Technician Safety Information for system disarming and arming procedures.
2. Disconnect battery ground cable.
3. Drain transmission fluid.
4. Slide transmission and transfer gearshifts lever boots upward and remove lever attaching bolts.
5. Disconnect return spring from transfer gearshift lever and remove both levers.
6. Remove starter motor.
7. Raise vehicle and disconnect exhaust pipe hanger at transmission.
8. Disconnect speedometer cable at transmission.
9. Disconnect ground cable, then remove rear propeller shaft.
10. Disconnect front propeller shaft at both ends.
11. Disconnect return spring, then the cable from clutch fork position cable aside.

12. Remove lower bolts from flywheel stone guard, then the bolts securing frame bracket to rear transmission mount, Fig. 3.
13. Remove rear mounting bolts from transfer case.
14. Remove side case attaching bolts, then the side case. Do not misplace detent spring and detent ball during disassembly.
15. Remove stud bolt from transfer case, then lower engine and transmission. Support rear of engine using suitable jack.
16. Disconnect electrical connectors at coasting richer system switch and back-up lamp switch.
17. Remove bolts retaining shifter cover, then the cover and gasket from top of transfer case.
18. Remove engine to transmission attaching bolts, then lower transmission from vehicle.
19. Reverse procedure to install.
20. On models equipped with airbag system, refer to Technician Safety Information for system disarming and arming procedures.
