Camshaft: Service and Repair

1. Relieve fuel system pressure as outlined under Technician Safety Information. On models with airbag system, refer to Technician Safety Information for system disarming and arming procedures.
2. Remove timing cover. Timing Cover
3. Remove fuel pump and pushrod.
4. Remove radiator.
5. On models with A/C, discharge A/C system and remove A/C condenser.
6. Remove timing chain and sprocket. Timing Chain
7. Withdraw camshaft from engine, using care not to damage camshaft bearings.

8. Reverse procedure to install. When installing timing chain, align valve timing marks as shown in Fig. 38. Whenever a new camshaft is installed, coat lobes with GM Engine Oil Supplement, or equivalent. It is also recommended that valve lifters be replaced to ensure durability of camshaft lobes and lifter feet.
