Brake Master Cylinder: Adjustments

1. Apply 19.7 inches of Hg negative pressure to vacuum servo.

Measuring Push Rod Length:





2. Measure pushrod length from tip to face, Fig. 1. Length should be .717 inch.
3. Ensure brake pedal spring will fully return brake pedal and measure pedal height.
4. Pedal height is taken from the bare floor, carpeting and mat removed, to the face of the rubber brake pedal cover.
5. Pedal height must be measured after starting and revving engine several times.
6. Pedal height should be 6.85-7.24 inches when fully released and 3.7 inches when a force of 110 lbs. has been applied to brake pedal.
7. Pedal free play must be measured after turning off engine and stepping firmly on brake pedal five times or more.
8. Pedal free play is 0.23-0.39 inch. If dimensions are not as outlined, adjust brake pedal as follows:
a. Disconnect stop lamp switch connector.
b. Loosen stop lamp switch lock nut.
c. Rotate stop lamp switch so it moves away from brake pedal.
d. Loosen lock nut on pushrod.
e. Adjust brake pedal to specified height by rotating pushrod in the appropriate direction.
f. Torque lock nut to 15 ft. lbs.

g. Adjust stop lamp switch to a clearance of .02-.04 inch by rotating housing, Fig. 2. Do not force pushrod into position.
h. Tighten stop lamp lock nut.
i. Connect stop lamp electrical connector.
