Installing Replacement Release Buttons
NOTEThe following procedure applies to either the driver or passenger front seat belt buckles. The driver front seat belt buckle, however contains a switch assembly that requires additional steps for this installation. These additional steps are clearly marked in this procedure.
1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Prepare the vehicle for release button replacement by placing a clean shop cloth on the seat and center console (if equipped). Position the seat to allow adequate working room.
3. Using a small pair of wire cutters, carefully cut the plastic outer cover of the front seat belt buckle along the separation line between the two cover halves (Figure 5).
4. Insert a medium size screwdriver into the edge of the slot, and gently pry open the two cover halves of the buckle (Figure 6).
IMPORTANT!
When disassembling the driver front seat belt buckle, do not pry in the center of the slot with the screwdriver - this could damage the switch assembly contained inside.
5. (Driver front seat belt buckle only) Using the wire cutters, carefully cut the three plastic pins that hold the switch assembly to the lower cover. Cut the bottom pin first, slide the switch down, then cut the top two pins (Figure 7).
6. (Driver front seat belt buckle only)
Use a small flat blade screwdriver to pry the switch assembly from the lower cover.
7. Remove the two cover halves.
8. Press the seat belt release button and release the latch spring using a small screwdriver (Figure 8).
9. Remove the release button and latch spring by applying a slight upward force while pulling the release button out of the buckle assembly (Figure 9).
10. Make sure that all springs and other components are in their proper place (Figure 10). If the buckle assembly is contaminated with dirt or other residue, clean it with suitable cleaning products, then dry it thoroughly using compressed air (40 PSI maximum).
IMPORTANT!
When using compressed air be sure to wear proper eye protection to prevent injury. Take extreme care blowing compressed air around the spring holder (Figure 10). The two button springs mounted on the spring holder rails can easily slide off or eject from the rails. If this happens and a button spring is lost, the buckle assembly becomes inoperative. Call the Isuzu Care Team Line immediately at 1-8OO-666-3411 for further instructions.
11. Insert the new release button into the buckle assembly. Press the release button and attach the latch spring using a small screwdriver (Figure 11).
12. Make sure that the release button operates properly and the latch spring is attached correctly.
13. Install the new upper cover to the buckle assembly.
14. (Driver front seat belt buckle only)
Position the switch assembly over the plastic pins on the new lower cover. Apply gentle pressure to the corners of the switch assembly to snap it into place (Figure 12).
IMPORTANT!
Do not apply pressure to the center of the switch assembly - this could damage it.
15. (Driver front seat belt buckle only)
Press the switch wires into the clamps and slide the switch upwards to its original position (Figure 13).
16. Press the release button and carefully assemble the two cover halves. Press the two cover halves together until a snap is heard and/or felt.
17. Test for proper seat belt buckle operation by inserting the latch tongue into the seat belt buckle, pulling firmly on the webbing to make sure that the tongue latches, and pressing the release button to make sure that the tongue releases. Repeat this step five (5) times.
IMPORTANT!
If the front seat belt buckle fails to operate properly, call the Isuzu Care Team Line at 1-800-666-3411 for further instructions.
18. Reconnect the negative battery cable.
19. Check for proper seat belt warning lamp operation.
20. Affix a campaign label (Part No. 2-90028-700-0) adjacent to the manufacturer's identification label located inside the driver's door. Using a ball-point pen, fill in the label with Campaign Number 95V-103.009, Isuzu dealer code, and repair date (Figure 14).
