Evaporative Emission Control Canister: Description and Operation

Fuel Vapor Canister:

PURPOSE
Storage container for fuel vapor.

LOCATION
On L.H. fender apron.

OPERATION
When the engine is not operating, vapor from the tank flows into the canister and is absorbed by the activated carbon. When the engine starts and the correct temperature is reached, air is drawn into the canister. The air displaces the vapors, which are drawn into the intake flow by vacuum through the piping and hoses.

CONSTRUCTION
The canister consists of a sealed case and two fittings on top of the canister. One connects to the fuel tank via tubing; the other to the thermal vacuum valve. On the inside of the canister is a bed of activated carbon, a reservoir at the bottom (to protect the integrity of the canister in the event liquid fuel does enter the canister. At the bottom of the canister is a filter to prevent contaminants from entering the canister.
