Check Tie Rod Measurements

Check Tie Rod Measurements

NOTE:
If you are working on a dealer inventory vehicle that has never had a front end alignment tie rod measurement check is not necessary. Skip to Perform Steering Wheel and Steering Angle Sensor Neutral Position Adjustments shown below. Apply tie rod measurement procedure to all other vehicles.

1. Measure "L" on both front tie rods as shown in Figure 16.

^ If both measurements are 73 - 80 mm each:

> Skip to Perform Steering Wheel and Steering Angle Sensor Neutral Position Adjustments, below and perform Step 3, 4, and 6 only.

^ If either or both measurements are not within the above range:

> Adjust measurement "L" on both tie rods to 78 mm (see Figure 16).

NOTE:
If the tie rods require adjustment a front wheel toe-in alignment will also need to be performed. You will be instructed to perform this alignment later in this procedure.

2. Go to Perform Steering Wheel and Steering Angle Sensor Neutral Position Adjustments below.

Perform Steering Wheel and Steering Angle Sensor Neutral Position Adjustments

3. Perform steering wheel neutral (center) position adjustment using C-III:

NOTE:
Values shown may be different than those monitored on your vehicle.

n. Set the vehicle on an alignment rack with the front tires positioned on the turn-plates (rotating pads).

^ Remove all turn-plate lock pins.

0. Set the value for ACTR ROTA ANG to zero degrees (0°) by turning the steering wheel (see Figure 25).

^ It may be necessary to make "quick" steering inputs/movements for this value to change.

p. Next set STR ANGLE SIG to the value written down in Step 3 m by (see Figure 25).

^ Set this value by turning the steering wheel slowly.

^ The ACTR ROTA ANG value needs to stay at "0.0". It should not change during STR ANGLE SIG setting if the steering wheel is turned slow enough.

IMPORTANT:
Once these values are displayed leave the steering wheel in its current position. Do not turn the steering wheel again until instructed in Step 3 v.
