Intelligent Key(R) - Vehicle No Start/Low Battery

2011 M; NO START AND / OR BATTERY LOW VOLTAGE DUE TO INTELLIGENT KEY AND WELCOME LIGHTING

APPLIED VEHICLE: 2011 M37 and M56 (Y51)

APPLIED VINs and DATES:
2011 M37 2VVD - Vehicles built before JN1BY1AP(*)BM 325633 and 9/29/2010

2011 M37 AWD - Vehicles built before JN1BY1AR(*)BM 375851 and 9/29/2010

2011 M56 2VVD - Vehicles built before JN1AY1AP(*)BM 521010 and 9/29/2010

2011 M56 AWD - Vehicles built before JN1AY1AR(*)BM 570828 and 9/29/2010

NOTE: This bulletin does not apply to M Hybrid (Y51 HV).

IF YOU CONFIRM:

An Applied Vehicle has a "battery low voltage" or "no start condition"

AND

The customer reports all of the following:

^ Vehicle is parked

^ Vehicle is locked

^ One of the Intelligent Keys (I-Key) is outside of the vehicle but within 3 meters (approximately 9.8 feet)

EXAMPLE: The customer reports the vehicle is parked and locked in the garage and the I-Key is left in the garage and/or within vehicle range.

NOTE:
This condition will keep the Welcome Light function cycling on and keep the BCM from going into "sleep mode".

ACTION:

1. Confirm this bulletin applies (see Repair Overview flowchart).

NOTE:
If the customer reports the I-Key is NOT within 3 meters (approximately 9.8 feet) when the vehicle is parked this bulletin DOES NOT APPLY. Go back to ASIST and / or the Electronic Service Manual (ESM) for further diagnostic and repair information.

2. If this bulletin applies use the Repair Overview flowchart to determine which repair procedures to apply to your vehicle.

REPAIR OVERVIEW

SERVICE PROCEDURE

IMPORTANT:
Follow all cautions, warnings, and notes in the Electronic Service Manual (ESM) when working on or near a Supplemental Restraint System (SRS), such as an airbag.

BCM PART NUMBER INSPECTION AND REPLACEMENT

1. Get the BCM part number (P/N) using C-III.

2. Compare the vehicle's BCM P/N to the P/N in the Current BCM P/N column in Table A below.

^ If there is a match replace the BCM.

> Perform "WRITE CONFIGURATION" with C-III.

> Perform I-Key initialization.

> For BCM location and "WRITE CONFIGURATION" procedure, refer to the BCS section of the ESM.

> For I-Key initialization procedure refer to the CONSULT-III Operation Manual.

^ If there is not a match proceed to BATTERY TESTING below.

BATTERY TESTING

1. Test the battery with the GR8 Multitasking Battery Diagnostic Station (battery tester/charger).

a. If the battery passes testing skip to Step 1c.

> Charge the battery if required by the battery tester/charger.

b. If the battery does not pass testing replace it with the one listed in PARTS INFORMATION.

> Make sure the replacement battery is fully charged and ready for service before releasing the vehicle to the customer.

c. Reset / Re-initialize Clock Radio Presets Power Windows etc. (Refer to ADDITIONAL SERVICE WHEN REMOVING BATTERY NEGATIVE TERMINAL in the GI section of the ESM for details).
