2000 G20 LACKS POWER (A/T IN 3RD GEAR FAIL-SAFE) DUE TO LOW BATTERY VOLTAGE

SERVICE INFORMATION

If a 2000 G20 experiences cranking voltage below 8 volts, the A/T Control Unit may enter fail-safe mode. The customer may indicate the vehicle lacks power and that the transmission remains in third gear at all times. If this incident occurs, the MIL will not illuminate and the following trouble codes will be stored in Self-Diagnosis Memory in CONSULT A/T:

^ VHCL SPEED SEN-A/T (Vehicle Speed Sensor Automatic Transmission [Revolution Sensor]) and

^ VHCL SPEED SEN-MTR (Vehicle Speed Sensor-Meter)

Should the incident occur, perform the following service procedure. Check for the stored trouble codes, test the engine charging system/battery, and repair the charging system/battery. Then install the replacement Revolution Sensor Assembly listed in the PARTS INFORMATION section of this bulletin.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. Perform Self-Diagnosis using CONSULT-II to check for VHCL SPEED SEN-A/T and VHCL SPEED SEN-MTR trouble codes stored.

2. Use Nissan Battery/Starting/Charging System Tester (Kent-Moore tool # J-44373, Model 620) to check the vehicle's battery and charging system for proper battery voltage.

NOTE:
Refer to bulletin number ITB99-036b, Infiniti Battery/Starting/Charging System Tester, for information about Kent-Moore tool # J-44373, Model 620 and procedures for testing the vehicle's battery and charging system.

3. Repair the charging system/battery.

4. Install the replacement Revolution Sensor Assembly listed in the PARTS INFORMATION section below.
