Body - Paint Spotting on Vehicle Sides

Group: PAINT

Number: 07-99-002

Date: APRIL, 2007

Model:
2007 ELANTRA

Subject:
PAINT SPOTS ON THE SIDE OF THE VEHICLE

DESCRIPTION:

This TSB updates TSB 00-99-001 specifically for the 2007 Elantra.

On some Elantra vehicles, moisture may have dripped from the outside mirrors onto the doors after the vehicles were dried, and were being prepared for Paint Protection Film (PPF) application. The moisture was covered by the PPF, trapping it under the PPF. Over time, the moisture can create spots in the paint.

CLOUDED PAINT SPOT REMOVAL PROCEDURE:

If any spots are noticed during the PDI inspection process, follow this procedure:

Clean the vehicle. If the spots are still visible, use an infrared light, similar to the type used in a body shop, to heat the affected area. Most infrared lights can be set up about 2 to 3 feet from the paint surface to achieve a hot surface temperature, depending on the heat output of the lamps. Do not let the paint temperature exceed 180°F. Be careful not to allow nearby trim to overheat (above 180°F)

Allow the infrared light to heat the vehicle for a minimum of 15 minutes, a maximum of 3 hours. Check the vehicle every 15 minutes to ensure it is not overly hot. You should be able to briefly touch the heated area, but it should be uncomfortably hot.

CAUTION:
During heating, anti corrosive wax used on the back side of the metal panels may liquefy. Some may drain out of the drain holes, and might need to be cleaned.

NOTE:
Alternative methods can be used for removing the spots, such as hot water, or a hand held heat gun. Wiping the area with alcohol can also speed up removing the trapped moisture. To use hot water, fill a a coffee cup with hot water from a coffee machine or other hot source. Pour the cup of hot water over the affected spots. Most spots are removed quickly. Repeat if necessary. To use a heat gun, follow the temperature guidelines for the heat lamps above. Aim the hot air over the affected area, but do not allow the temperature to rise above 180 degrees F.

NOTE:
The labor time is calculated based on the heat lamp procedure. Any additional time required for using an alternative method is not covered.

CAUTION:
If using hot water to remove the spots, use normal safety practices to avoid injury. Dry any water spillage immediately to prevent slips or falls on a slippery floor.
