Group

Number
03-30-002

Date
06-2003

Model
ELANTRA 2003 AND TIBURON 2003

Subject
2003 ELANTRA AND TIBURON FILLER NECK FLAPPER VALVE

DESCRIPTION:

The spring-loaded door (flapper valve) in the fuel filler neck has been deleted on the Elantra (effective February 24, 2003) and Tiburon (effective March 15, 2003).

The California Air Resources Board (CARB) and the U.S. EPA eliminated the requirement for the flapper valve in 1996; however, CARB and the U.S. EPA still require the restrictor device to prevent accidental fueling with a wide spout (15/16" fueling nozzle (diesel, kerosene, and leaded gasoline). The restrictor device must only allow a 13/16 unleaded gasoline nozzle into the filler neck.

FUEL FILLER NECK TERMINOLOGY:

1. Fuel Pump Nozzle Restrictor Device (0.85" diameter) for unleaded fuel - This device prevents a 15/16 (0.9375" diameter leaded, diesel or kerosene fuel pump nozzle from being inserted into the filler neck. Even though leaded fuel is no longer available, the restrictor is still required for all unleaded gasoline vehicles.

2. Spring-Loaded Door (flapper valve - located behind the restrictor device) - If fuelling is attempted with a leaded, diesel or kerosene fuel nozzle, the fuel will pool in front of the flapper valve and cause the nozzle's automatic shut-off device to activate. The requirement for the spring-loaded door (flapper valve) was eliminated in 1996 (for 1997 model year vehicles and later).
