AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE HARSH AND/OR DELAYED SHIFTS

NOTE
This TSB provides a procedure to diagnose the commands from the TCM and is an alternate procedure to using the A/T Tester.

DESCRIPTION:

If an automatic transaxle with a harsh and/or delayed shift condition is being serviced, check for Diagnostic Trouble Codes in both the "Engine" and "Automatic Transaxle" menus. If DTC are found, repair according to the appropriate TSB or shop manual. If no DTC are found, go to "Diagnostic Procedure" below.

DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE:
Attach the Hi-Scan Pro and select the following:

NOTE
Ask an assistant to drive the vehicle as you monitor the Hi-Scan Pro.

- Hyundai Vehicle Diagnosis" menu

- "Automatic Transaxle" menu





- "Flight Record" menu

^ "Vehicle Speed", then F1 "FIX"

^ "Shift Position", then F1 "FIX"

- F6 "RCD", "ENTER" and F5 "TRIG"

- Accelerate vehicle 1-2-3-4, then F6 "END"

- F1 "GRPH"

Confirm the TCM commanded each gear:

^ If so, go to "HARSH OR DELAYED UPSHIFTS".

^ If not, check the wiring between the TCM and transaxle for a short or open circuit. If ok, replace the TCM.

HARSH OR DELAYED UPSHIFTS:
Attach the Hi-Scan Pro and select the following:
1-2 UPSHIFT:

- "Hyundai Vehicle Diagnosis" menu

- "Automatic Transaxle" menu

- "FLIGHT RECORD" menu

^ 2nd Solenoid Duty", then F1 "FIX"

^ OD Solenoid Duty", then F1 "FIX"

- F6 "RCD", "ENTER" and F5 "TRIG"

- Accelerate vehicle 1-2, then F6 "END"

- F1 "GRPH"





Confirm the TCM adjusts the 2nd solenoid duty during the 1-2 upshift as shown.

^ If so, go to "DIAGNOSIS".

^ If not, replace the TCM.

2-3 UPSHIFT:
Repeat for the 2-3 upshift

- Accelerate vehicle 2-3, then F6 "END"





Confirm the TCM adjusts the OD solenoid duty during the 2-3 upshift as shown.

^ If so, go to DIAGNOSIS".

^ If not, replace the TCM.

3-4 UPSHIFT:
Repeat for the 3-4 upshift (for XG300, select "2nd Solenoid Duty" and "RED Solenoid Duty"). Accelerate vehicle 3-4, then F6 "END".





Confirm the TCM adjusts the solenoid duty during the 3-4 upshift as shown:

^ If so, go to "DIAGNOSIS".

^ If not, replace the TCM.

4-5 UPSHIFT:
Repeat for the 4-5 upshift (for XG350, select "2nd Solenoid Duty" and "RED Solenoid Duty"). Accelerate vehicle 4-5, then F6 "END".





Confirm the TCM adjusts the solenoid duty during the 3-4 upshift as shown:

^ If so, go to "DIAGNOSIS".

^ If not, replace the TCM.

DIAGNOSIS:

Toggle the left and right keys to measure the start and end of each shift, then subtract the two numbers. If any shift requires more than 2.0 seconds, swap a TCM from a properly operating vehicle:

- If the condition is improved, replace the TCM.

- If the condition is not improved:

^ Check the oil temperature sensor according to TSB # 00-40-010.

^ Compare the vehicle with another vehicle of the same year and model. If the shift quality condition is more noticeable than for other vehicles, replace the transaxle.
