Service Procedure

NOTE
The following instructions are for the black tape attached to the rear frame of the left front door. This procedure is also applicable for the other door frames black tape locations. The service procedure for the Elantra 5-door rear door rear tape replacement is shown in this bulletin.

1. Open the affected door and lower the left front door glass fully.

2. Remove the left hand outside rearview mirror.





3. Carefully remove the front door belt outside weatherstrip.

CAUTION
Use caution not to damage the strip mounting clips and door panel during removal.





4. Detach the front door window glass run from the door frame. Do not remove.





5. Apply heat with a heat gun and carefully remove the black tape from the top of the door frame.





6. Loosen any remaining adhesive on the door frame surface with a rag dampened with rubbing alcohol.

7. Remove the loosened adhesive with a dry paper towel. Repeat these steps until the adhesive is completely removed.





8. Spray a thin layer of water on the door frame surface.





9. Remove the adhesive backing from the top portion of the new black tape.





10. Attach the top portion of the black tape to the door frame. Carefully align the upper end of the black tape with the upper edge of the door frame.

11. Attach the black tape to the door frame, working downward.





NOTE
Dotted lines are shown for clarity and are not visible.





12. Using a rubber squeegee (3M Scotchcal (TM) or equivalent), press and slide across the black tape in a downward motion until all the bubbles in the black tape are completely removed.





CAUTION
Make certain the edges of the black tape align to the door frame correctly. If the tape is not aligned correctly, peel back the misaligned portion, spray additional water if necessary and reattach the black tape.





13. Apply a thin bead of adhesive (instantaneous dry type) to the tip of a flathead screwdriver and subsequently to the back sides of the door frame (approximately 8 inches (200 mm) from the bottom of the black tape). The areas where the adhesive is applied must be covered by the left and right side of the black tape when folded and attached.

NOTE
Recommended adhesive: 3-Bond 1783 or equivalent (Loctite 411). Follow the manufacturer instructions before installation.





14. Fold and attach the black tape edges over the door frame.





15. Apply heat to securely attach the black tape to the edges.

16. Reinstall the left front door glass run.

17. Reinstall the front door belt outside weather strip. Raise and lower the door glass to ensure it is working properly.

18. Reinstall the left hand outside rearview mirror.

SERVICE PROCEDURE FOR ELANTRA 5-DOOR REAR DOOR REAR TAPE REPLACEMENT:





Rear Door Black Tape





1. Open the affected door.





2. Remove the rear door frame inner cover.





3. Remove the rear door delta molding assembly.

4. Follow steps 3 - 16 from the previous procedures to replace the black tape.
