Subject
2001-03 ELANTRA WIND NOISE RELATED TO FRONT DOOR WEATHERSTRIP
DESCRIPTION:
Some 2001-03 MY Elantra vehicles may experience a high pitched wind noise sound when driven at highway speeds or during high cross winds. The noise may be described as coming from the front window glass along the top of the A-pillar area.
This wind noise condition may be caused by a distorted front door weatherstrip and may also be intermittent and dependent on vehicle speed and wind condition.
This bulletin provides procedures to verify the wind noise condition and, if necessary, to replace the front door weatherstrip.
ANALYSIS:
1. Test drive the vehicle to verify the wind noise.
2. Use masking tape or duct tape to completely cover one side of the affected A-pillar region.
3. Test drive the vehicle with the upper A-pillar region covered. If the wind noise disappears, replace the front door weatherstrip. If the wind noise is still present, continue to step # 4.
4. Use masking tape or duct tape to completely cover the other side of the A-pillar region (leave the previous taped side intact).
5. Test drive the vehicle with both upper A-pillar regions covered. If the wind noise disappears, replace the front door weatherstrip.
NOTE
If the condition still persists, check the A-pillar trim along the windshield and/or cowl area where the fender, hood and A-pillar meet for possible wind noise.
SERVICE PROCEDURE:
1. Open the affected front door.
2. Carefully remove the existing plastic cap located at the upper corner of the door as shown and retain for use with the new weatherstrip.
3. Remove the plastic fixing clip from the underside of the original weatherstrip and retain for use with the new weatherstrip.
4. Starting at the upper corner, carefully pull off the weatherstrip from the door frame.
5. Using a trim removal tool, remove the plastic door weatherstrip retaining clips from the vehicle.
6. Remove the front door checker mounting bolt from the front door and remove the door weatherstrip.
7. Install new weatherstrip in reverse order of removal.
NOTE
The new weatherstrip will have a lot date code of 11/01/2002 or later. The stamped Lot Date codes are located at several locations on the weatherstrip.
NOTE:
The retaining clips are pre-installed to the new door weatherstrips.
8. Check that the weatherstrip is being compressed correctly when the door is closed. Make sure there are no gaps when the door is shut.
9. Test drive the vehicles to verify the condition has been repaired.
