Subject
ATM DIODE CORROSION IN THE CONTROL WIRING HARNESS

DESCRIPTION:

Some 2000-2002 MY Accent vehicles may experience ATM diode pin corrosion in the control wiring harness located behind the dash panel. Water from the cowl top panel may enter through an improperly sealed control wiring harness grommet in the dash panel.

A corroded ATM diode may result in the following symptoms:

^ Diagnostic Trouble Code P0707 (Transaxle range switch - Open circuit)

^ Diagnostic Trouble Code P0708 (Transaxle range switch - Short circuit)

^ Diagnostic Trouble Code P1529 (M/L-on request signal to ECM)

^ Diagnostic Trouble Code P1586 (Encoding signal circuit not rational)

^ Harsh shift and transaxle held in 3rd gear fail-safe

If a vehicle with these symptoms is being serviced, follow the ATM diode replacement procedure provided in this TSB. Do not replace the automatic transaxle or control wiring harness.

VEHICLES AFFECTED:

^ Model: 2000-2002 ACCENT vehicles with automatic transaxles

^ Affected vehicle production date range: Produced through April 30, 2002

^ Affected vehicle identification number (VIN) range:

- 3 Door: Produced through KMHCG35CO2U22O100

- 4 Door: Produced through KMHCG45C02U375204

SERVICE PROCEDURE

NOTE:
Verify that the vehicle is affected by identifying the vehicle production date and VIN.

1. Open and secure hood.

2. Remove the mounting nuts (10 mm, 2 each) that secure the harness grommet to the dash panel.

3. Pull out the harness grommet.

4. Locate the ATM diode wrapped with yellow tape and remove the yellow tape from the harness.

5. Insert a screwdriver next to the tab. Lift the tab up and pry the diode from the holder.

6. Clean the diode holder female connectors using aerosol contact cleaner such as:

NAPA Electronic Cleaner, P/N 765-1843

MOPAR MP-50 Electrical Contact Cleaner, P/N 04549626 or equivalent

7. Apply contact grease in each opening of the diode connector terminal (NYOGEL 760G, P/N 00305-F0000-39).

8. Insert the new ATM diode (P/N 91789-34200) into the diode connector.

9. Wrap waterproof tape around the harness along the portion as shown.

10. Reinstall the harness rubber grommet to the dash panel hole and tighten the grommet mounting nuts (10 mm, 2 each).

NOTE:
Make certain the rubber grommet is securely installed.

11. Close the hood.

12. Erase all DTC. Test drive the vehicle for two key-on to key-off driving cycles. If no DTC recur, return the vehicle to the customer.
