INSTRUCTIONS FOR P0128 (THERMOSTAT)
Some 2002 MY Accents with the 1.6L engine may have the "Check Engine" light illuminate and the diagnostic trouble code P0128 (thermostat stuck open) stored in the ECM. This code can be incorrectly set if the driving conditions are as follows:
^ Ambient air temperature is about 10-21°C (50-70°F)
^ Engine is cold
^ Vehicle is driven at low speeds
^ A/C is on
^ Blower speed is set at 3 or 4
If the code is incorrectly set, perform the ECM software reprogramming procedure using the Hi-Scan Pro as outlined in this TSB.
The vehicles affected are all 2002 1.6L Accents produced before February 2, 2002.
ECM SPECIFICATION TABLE:
CAUTIONS BEFORE REPROGRAMMING:
1. Conduct reprogramming with the ignition key in the ON position.
2. Assure that the vehicle and the Hi-Scan Pro are securely connected during the entire reprogramming session.
WARNING: If reprogramming is interrupted, the manual update procedure must be followed as outlined in this TSB.
3. Do not start the engine during reprogramming.
4. Do not turn the ignition key off during reprogramming.
5. When the reprogramming is completed turn the ignition key off for 20 seconds before starting the engine.

^ If the Hi-Scan Pro does not download the program, use the manual update procedure in the following section.
WARNING:
Do not interrupt the reprogramming at any time. The ECM will be rendered inoperative if the program does not download properly.
