Exhaust System - MIL ON/DTC P0133 (O2 Sensor) Set

Group: ENGINE ELECTRICAL

Number: 06-36-004

Date: JUNE, 2006

Model: 2000-2002 ACCENT

Subject
2000-2002 ACCENT CHECK ENGINE LIGHT DTC P0133
FRONT OXYGEN SENSOR SLOW RESPONSE

DESCRIPTION:

When diagnosing Code P0133 (Front Oxygen Sensor - Slow Response) on a 2000 - 2002 model year Accent, verify the integrity of the front exhaust pipe between the front and rear oxygen sensors. A leak in the pipe can affect the ECM diagnostic logic for the front oxygen sensor.

REPAIR PROCEDURE:

1. Inspect the exhaust front pipe for a possible exhaust leak.

NOTE:
An exhaust leak may be more noticeable if you inspect while a helper temporarily partially restricts the exhaust outlet tip to build back pressure in the exhaust.

2. Replace the exhaust front pipe if leak is confirmed and continue with the next step.

If no leak is found this TSB does not apply.

3. Run the engine until normal operating temperature and monitor the front oxygen sensor (bank-1 sensor-1) by GDS or Hi-Scan graph mode to confirm it has good regular switching as shown in the GDS captured graph above. When engine speed is raised to 2500 rpm no-load, the switching rate of the sensor should increase (more cycling per period of time).

4. If the oxygen sensor is confirmed to have good switching and the switching rate increases as engine speed is raised, the front oxygen sensor in the exhaust manifold should not be replaced.
