DESCRIPTION:

Some 1999 Elantra, Tiburon and Accent vehicles equipped with automatic transaxles that were produced between 3/25/99 and 4/30/99 may exhibit one or more of the following conditions:

^ Slips during a downshift from 4th to 2nd gear at approximately 30-55 mph

^ Slips during an upshift from 2nd to 3rd or 3rd to 4th gear

^ Slips when accelerating from a stop or when driving around a curve

^ Slips causing the vehicle to not accelerate or not move

^ DTCs P0732, P0733, P0734 (Non-Synchronous 2nd, 3rd and 4th gear)

The slipping condition is due to a leaking seal under the pressure control solenoid valve (PCSV).

Do NOT replace the transaxle for this condition until you have followed the Inspection Procedure shown below:

INSPECTION PROCEDURE:

Drain the ATF, remove the transaxle oil pan and inspect the ATF. If the ATF is:

^ Clean and no clutch material is found in the oil pan, Follow Repair Procedure.

^ Dark brown or black and clutch material is found in the oil pan, Replace the Transaxle.

NOTE:
IN THE RARE CASE WHEN THE ATM REQUIRES REPLACEMENT UNDER THIS CAMPAIGN, PRIOR AUTHORIZATION IS REQUIRED FROM YOUR DPSM.
