Checking For Refrigerant Leaks

Conduct a leak test with an electronic leak detector whenever leakage of refrigerant is suspected and when conducting service operations which are accompanied by disassembly or loosening of connection fittings.

NOTE: The gas leak tester used in the R12 system cannot be used for detecting leaks of the R134a gas because of insufficient sensitivity. The newly introduced leak tester has a higher sensitivity and can be used for both the R134a and R12 refrigerants.

1. Attach an air Conditioning Service Station.
2. Open high pressure valve to charge the system to about 100 kPa (14psi), then close the supply valve.
3. Check the system for leaks using a leak detector.
4. If you find leaks that require the system to be opened (to repair or replace hoses, fittings, etc.), release any charge in the system according to the Discharge Procedure. Refer to Service and Repair.
5. After checking and repairing leaks, the system must be evacuated.
