Disassembly

Before disassembly, measure rack starting force and pinion starting torque in straight ahead position for reference at assembly.
1. Clean rack and pinion assembly and mount it in a soft-jawed vise.
2. Remove tie rod assembly.
3. Remove locknut from yoke plug.
4. Using socket tool No. 09565-21100, or equivalent, remove yoke plug.
5. Remove yoke spring, cushion rubber and support yoke from gearbox.
6. Remove dust cap.
7. Remove oil seal from gearbox.
8. Remove snap ring from gearbox then pinion and bearing.
9. Remove bearing retainer snap ring from pinion.
10. Using bearing removal tool No. 09565-21000, or equivalent, remove bearing from pinion.
11. Remove bellows.
12. Using a chisel, unstake right side rack end nut.
13. Move rack fully towards rack housing and hold toothed portion of rack in a soft-jawed vise. Loosen tie rod end and remove tie rod assembly from rack.
14. Remove rack from gear housing.
