Inspection

1. Check camshaft journals for wear. If journals are badly worn, replace camshaft.
2. Check cam lobes for damage. If lobe is damaged or worn excessively, replace camshaft.
3. Check cam surface for abnormal wear or damage, and replace if necessary.
4. Check each bearing for damage. If bearing surface is excessively damaged, replace cylinder head assembly or camshaft bearing cap, as necessary.
5. Check camshaft front oil seal as follows:
a. Check lips for wear. If lip threads are worn, replace.
b. Check oil seal lip contacting surface of camshaft. If it is worn in stages, replace camshaft. Camshaft endplay should be 0.003-0.011 inch.
6. Inspect HLA. With HLA filled with engine oil, squeeze HLA together by hand. If HLA compresses, replace HLA.
