Canister Purge Solenoid: Testing and Inspection

INSPECTION








Using Scan tool

Check Item: Evaporative Emission Canister Purge Solenoid Valve.
Drive Content: Solenoid valve from OFF to ON.
Check Conditions: Ignition Switch ON.
- Operating sound should be heard when activated.

Actuator Inspection

1. Disconnect the black with red striped vacuum hose from the Canister Purge Solenoid Valve.
2. Disconnect the harness connector.





3. Connect a vacuum pump to the nipple which the vacuum hose was connected.
4. Apply vacuum and verify the following conditions;





- When battery voltage is applied across the terminals vacuum is released.
- When battery voltage is disconnected vacuum is maintained.





5. Measure the resistance between the terminals of the Canister Purge Solenoid Valve.

Resistance: 36 - 44 ohms at 20°C (68°F).

6. If not all conditions are met, replace the Canister Purge Solenoid Valve.

Harness Inspection Procedure





1. Measure the power supply voltage.
- Connector disconnected.
- Ignition Switch ON.
- Voltage should read system voltage.

If OK - go to step 2.
If not OK - Repair the harness (MFI Control Relay - H2).





2. Check for an open-circuit, or a short circuit to ground between the Evaporative Emission Canister Purge Solenoid Valve and the Engine Control Module.
- Engine Control Module connector Disconnected.
- Evaporative Emission Canister Purge Solenoid Valve connector disconnected.

If OK - END.
If not OK - Repair the harness (H 1 - C50-4 5).
