Elantra and Excel Crank Angle Sensor Inspection
This Technical Service Bulletin has been updated to include production dates and provides instructions to be followed when performing the Crank Angle Sensor Inspection to determine if the sensor needs to be replaced.
Effective Production Dates:
1994 Excels produced beginning January 19, 1994 thru January 31, 1994. 1994 Elantras produced beginning January 27, 1994 thru February 21, 1994.
EXCEL DISTRIBUTOR INSPECTION PROCEDURE
1. Locate the distributor production date stamp embossed into the distributor housing metal. The production date code is stamped into the housing on the side that faces the left fender.
A. If the number is between 4A2O and 4A24 inclusive, the internal optical sensor production date stamp must be inspected. Go to Step 2.
B. If the production date stamp is not within that production range, no further inspection is required. Place a small punch mark over the 13th digit of the VIN on the B-Pillar plate to indicate that the vehicle has been inspected.
2. If the production code was found to be within the range above, remove the distributor cap, rotor, seal and dust cover and inspect the production date stamp on the optical sensor. If it is 4A15, the distributor MUST be replaced. After replacing the distributor be sure to retime the engine to specifications found on the under hood sticker.
Timing Specification: 5° +/- 2°
After repair procedures are complete, place a small punch mark over the 13th digit of the VIN on the left B-Pillar plate to indicate the vehicle has been inspected/repaired.
1. Locate the CAS production date stamp that is located on the exterior upper surface of the CAS. The number is embossed into the surface of the CAS housing.
A. If the production date stamp is between 4A25 and 4B03 (inclusive), the CAS assembly MUST be replaced. If the number is not within the production date range indicated, no further inspection is required.
B. After completing the inspection or replacing the CAS place a small punch mark over the last digit of the VIN plate on the left front door to indicate that the inspection/repair has been completed.
Note:
After replacing the distributor be sure to retime the engine to specifications found on the under hood sticker.
