Engine: Service and Repair

The engine and transaxle are removed as an assembly.
1. Disconnect battery cables and remove battery.
2. Remove air cleaner.
3. Disconnect back-up lamp and engine harness electrical connectors.
4. On models with 5-speed transaxle, disconnect select control valve electrical connector.
5. Disconnect alternator and oil pressure switch electrical connectors.
6. Drain cooling system.
7. On models with automatic transaxle, disconnect cooling lines from radiator.
8. Disconnect upper and lower radiator hoses from engine, then remove radiator attaching bolts and the radiator.
9. Disconnect high tension leads and electrical connections from distributor and ignition coil.
10. Disconnect engine ground, then the brake booster vacuum hose.
11. Disconnect fuel supply, return and vapor hoses from engine.
12. Disconnect heater hoses and accelerator cable from engine.
13. Disconnect clutch or selector control lever cable from transaxle.
14. Disconnect speedometer cable from transaxle.
15. Remove A/C compressor mounting bracket, if equipped, and position compressor aside.
16. Raise and support vehicle, then drain transaxle.
17. Disconnect exhaust pipe or turbocharger discharge pipe from manifold. Support pipe from underside of vehicle with suitable wire.
18. On models with manual transaxle, disconnect shift control and extension rods from transaxle.
19. Disconnect ball joint and strut bar from control arms and driveshafts from transaxle. Plug openings in transaxle to prevent dirt entry, then support control arms and driveshafts from underside of vehicle with suitable wire.
20. Attach suitable lifting equipment to engine, then raise engine slightly.
21. Disconnect engine mounts from engine.
22. Ensure all remaining cables, hoses, harnesses and connectors that will interfere with engine removal are disconnected.
23. Remove cover from right front fender shield, then disconnect transaxle mountings.
24. Direct transaxle side of engine/transaxle assembly downward, then raise hoist and remove assembly from vehicle.
25. Reverse procedure to install.
