Cylinder Head Assembly: Service and Repair

1. Disconnect battery ground cable, then drain coolant.
2. Disconnect upper radiator hose, then remove breather hose.
3. Remove air intake pipe and air intake hose, if equipped.
4. Disconnect all electrical connectors, hoses and vacuum lines that will interfere with cylinder head removal.
5. Disconnect high tension leads from spark plugs, then remove distributor.
6. Remove surge tank, intake manifold, heat cowl and exhaust manifold from cylinder head.
7. Remove timing belt cover.
8. Move timing belt tensioner fully toward water pump and temporarily secure it.
9. Remove timing belt from camshaft sprocket. Do not remove belt from crankshaft sprocket.
10. Remove rocker cover.

11. Using cylinder head bolt wrench, tool No. 09221-11000, or equivalent, loosen and remove cylinder head attaching bolts in sequence shown in Fig. 13.
12. Remove cylinder head from vehicle and gasket from cylinder block.
13. Reverse procedure to install. Tighten cylinder head bolts as follows:

a. Torque cylinder head bolts to 25 ft. lbs. in sequence shown in Fig. 15.
b. Re-torque bolts in sequence to final specification: cold at 51-54 ft. lbs.; hot at 58-61 ft. lbs.
14. After cylinder head has been installed, ensure timing belt is correctly installed and positioned, then adjust timing belt tension and valve clearances.
