Installation
1. Check camshaft journals for wear. If journals are badly worn, replace camshaft.Fig. 25 Checking Camshaft Endplay:
3. Install camshaft thrust case and thrust plate to camshaft end, then tighten attaching bolt securely. Check camshaft endplay with suitable feeler gauge as shown in Fig. 26. Endplay should be 0.002-0.008 inch. If endplay exceeds specifications, replace thrust case and recheck endplay.
3. Lubricate camshaft journals and thrust surfaces with engine oil, then install camshaft into cylinder head.
4. Install camshaft thrust case with threaded hole facing upward. Align threaded hole with bolt hole in cylinder head, then install and firmly tighten attaching bolt.
. Install rear cover and gasket. Firmly tighten bolts.
6. Install camshaft oil seal. Lubricate external surface of seal with engine oil to facilitate installation.
7. Install camshaft sprocket.
8. Install rocker arm and shaft assembly.
Fig. 20 Camshaft & Crankshaft Sprocket Timing Marks:
9. Align camshaft and crankshaft sprocket timing marks as shown in Fig. 20. When marks are properly aligned, the No. 1 piston will be at TDC of compression stroke.
10. Install timing belt. Adjust tension as outlined under Timing Belt procedure.
11. Temporarily set valve clearances with engine cold. With engine cold, valve clearances should be set as follows: exhaust and jet valves, 0.007 inch; intake valves, 0.003 inch.
12. Install new gasket into rocker cover groove, then temporarily install rocker cover.
13. Start engine and allow to reach normal operating temperature, then readjust valve clearances.
14. Install rocker cover.
15. Install timing belt cover.
