California
Adjustment conditions:Engine coolant temperature, 176°F to 203°F.
Engine lubricant temperature, over 176°F.
Lights, electric cooling fan and all accessories, OFF.
Transmission, in neutral ("P" or "N" range for A/T vehicles).
Steering wheel, in the straight forward position (Vehicles with power steering).
1. Loosen the accelerator cable.
Tachometer Check Connector Location:
2. Install a tachometer to the tachometer check connector.
Diagnostic Connector Location:
3. Install a volt meter between the diagnostic check connector and ground.
4. Turn the key to the ON position. DO NOT START THE ENGINE. After approximately 15 seconds the idle speed control (ISC) servo will fully extend and retract.
Idle Speed Control (ISC) Servo Connector:
5. Turn the key to the OFF position and disconnect the ISC servo connector.
6. To prevent the throttle valve from sticking closed, open and close the throttle 2 or 3 times and allow it to click shut.
Fixed SAS Location:
7. Loosen the fixed SAS screw until it no longer touches the throttle lever.
8. Start the engine and check the idle speed.
Idle Speed....700 ± 100 rpm
9. If the idle speed is not as indicated, adjust by turning the ISC adjusting screw.
10. Turn the SAS adjusting screw until the idle speed just begins to raise, the turn it the opposite direction until the rpm's cease to change (touch point).
11. Turn the SAS adjusting screw back another 1/2 turn.
12. Stop the engine and turn the key to the ON position.
Throttle Position Sensor (TP Sensor) Circuit:
13. Using a digital volt meter, backprobe TPS harness connector terminals 20 and 1 and measure the voltage.
Voltage....0.48 - 0.52 VDC
Adjusting Throttle Position Sensor (TPS):
14. If the voltage is incorrect, loosen the throttle position sensor set screws and turn the sensor clockwise to increase voltage, counterclockwise to decrease voltage.
15. Turn the key to the OFF position.
16. Adjust throttle cable freeplay.
Freeplay
A/T-4....0.12 - 0.2 in (3 - 5 mm)
M/T....0.04 - 0.08 in (1 - 2 mm)
17. Reconnect the ISC connector.
18. Disconnect the volt meters from the diagnostic check and the ECU connectors.
19. Start the engine and check the idle speed.
Idle Speed....700 ± 100 rpm
