EXTREME TEMPERATURE COLD START PRECAUTIONS
CONDITION:
During extremely cold temperatures (below - 20 degrees F) some customers may experience difficulty in starting their vehicles. To start the engine under extreme cold conditions, turn the ignition switch to the "START" position and depress the accelerator approximately 25 percent. Continue to crank the engine until the vehicle starts. If flooding occurs, or the smell of gasoline is present at the exhaust pipe, depress the accelerator to the wide open position and repeat.
CAUTION:
Do not crank the engine continuously for more than 30 seconds as starter motor damage may occur.
Check the following to minimize cold start difficulties:
- Verify the battery is fully charged and that the charging system is functioning properly.
- Ensure the battery posts are free of corrosion, and that the battery terminals are tightly fastened to the battery posts.
- For temperatures of 10 degrees F or below, ensure the engine is correctly filled with winter grade oil. Refer to the owner's manual for the correct weight and quantity.
