1.5 L ENGINE INITIAL START/STALLING FIELD FIX REPAIR KIT
Some 1990 - 1992 Excels and 1991 - 1992 Scoupes with automatic transmissions may stall when the transaxle is shifted into gear immediately after starting a cold engine in ambient air temperatures of 60 - 86° F. A cold start enrichment field fix kit has been designed to correct this condition. This kit does not affect engine performance at any other time.
It is imperative that you check, and adjust as necessary, the following items prior to installing the repair kit:
1. Perform MUT diagnosis:
A. Check for ECU fault codes.
B. Verify proper reading from:
1) Air flow sensor (# 12)
2) Air intake temperature sensor (# 13)
3) Engine coolant temperature sensor (# 21)
4) Barometric pressure sensor (# 25)
2. Check and adjust the base idle speed, throttle position sensor, and ignition timing according to the shop manual procedure.
3. Check for vacuum leaks from vacuum hose connections, PCV hose and EGR system.
4. Check automatic transaxle fluid level (must be checked in Neutral, not Park).
The repair kit should only be installed if the engine initial start stalling condition remains after checking all of the items listed above.
The repair kit (Part No.39901-24Q20D) consists of a modulator, extension harness, adapter and two tie straps.

NOTE:
Red tape on extension harness indicates ECU side of harness.
INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Turn the ignition switch off and disconnect the battery negative terminal. Be sure to record customers radio stations prior to battery disconnect.
2. Remove the lower crash pad assembly on the driver's side.
3. Remove the control relay.
4. Remove the relay box.
5. Remove the plastic ECU harness protector bolted below the ECU and disconnect the three connectors from the electronic control unit (ECU).
6. Strap the modulator and the extension harness together as shown, and cut the excess tie strap off. Connect one set of extension harness connectors (the end with no red tape) to one side of the adapter.
7. Secure the adapter to the ECU
WARNING:
Make sure the adapter is fastened securely to the ECU and that the extension harness does not interfere with the brake pedal.
8. Connect the remaining extension harness connectors (the end with the red tape) to the ECU and the control harness connectors to the adapter
9. Re-install the ECU protector, relay box, control relay and the lower crash pad assembly.
10. Reconnect the battery negative terminal. Reset customer's radio stations and clock.
