Catalytic Converter Check Procedures

The following procedures are for inspecting and, if necessary, replacing the catalytic converter.

1. Loosen the 2 bolts and 2 nuts and remove the catalytic converter from between the two exhaust pipes.

2. Check the catalytic converter for evidence of damage:

^ Internal rattling noise when shaking the catalytic converter.

^ Crack in the catalyst monolith.

^ Mat which covers the catalyst cannot be seen.

^ No catalyst biscuit present.

^ Light cannot be seen when looking through the catalytic converter.

^ Catalyst has been partly broken or the bottom side of it has sunk when seen from the front flange of the catalytic converter.

If any of the above conditions exist, the catalytic converter must be replaced. If the catalytic converter exhibits none of the above conditions, the catalytic converter may be reinstalled. Proceed to step three for installation procedures.

3. Position the catalytic converter between the front exhaust pipe and the center exhaust pipe, then install and tighten both the 2 bolts and 2 nuts. When servicing, also replace the gaskets (P/N 28764-36010) and the nuts (P/N 28769-21000).
