SONATA, 1990 MY EXCEL
Condition: When the starter is engaged, the engine will crank over but not start due to no spark.
Cause: A noise filter is in line between the ignition coil and the tachometer to suppress electrical surges. When this noise filter malfunctions, it may ground the ignition system resulting in a no start condition.
Sonata: The noise filter is located on the power transistor bracket next to the distributor. (See the Sonata Electrical Troubleshooting Manual page 201, photograph # 4.).
Excel: The noise filter is bolted onto the air intake surge tank near the distributor.
Diagnosis: To test a suspected malfunctioning noise filter, unplug the noise filter connector (connector C08 for the Sonata and C23 for the Excel) and try to start the engine. If the engine starts with the noise filter unplugged, but will not run with it connected, the noise filter is faulty.
Correction: Replace noise filter.
