Engine: Service and Repair
1. Disconnect battery ground cable.2. Detach air cleaner.
3. Disconnect connectors for back-up lamp switch and engine harness.
4. On models with 5-speed manual transaxle, disconnect select control valve connector.
5. Disconnect connectors for alternator harness and oil pressure gauge wiring.
6. Drain engine coolant.
7. On models with an automatic transaxle, disconnect transaxle oil cooler hoses. When disconnecting hoses, identify their location to avoid making any errors during reassembly. Be careful not to spill any oil. Also take care in preventing entrance of foreign material.
8. Disconnect radiator upper and lower hoses on engine side, and then remove radiator assembly.
9. Disconnect engine ground.
10. Disconnect brake booster vacuum hose.
11. Remove main fuel line, and return and vapor hoses from engine side.
12. Disconnect inlet and outlet heater hoses on engine side.
13. Disconnect accelerator cable at engine side.
14. On models with manual transaxle, remove clutch cable from transaxle.
15. On models with an automatic transaxle, remove control cable from transaxle.
16. Disconnect speedometer cable from transaxle.
17. Disconnect air conditioner from mounting bracket.
18. Jack up vehicle.
19. Drain transaxle oil.
20. Disconnect front exhaust pipe from manifold. Use wire to suspend exhaust pipe from bottom of vehicle.
21. On models with manual transaxle, remove shift control rod and extension rod.
22. Remove lower arm ball joint bolts and strut bar at point where it is mounted to lower arm.
23. Remove driveshafts from transaxle case. Plug axle holes of transaxle case to prevent entry of foreign material. Install new circlips on driveshafts when reassembling.
24. Hang lower arm and driveshaft from body with wire.
25. Attach a cable to engine, and use a chain hoist to lift engine only enough to pull cable tight.
26. Remove front roll stopper.
27. Remove rear roll stopper.
28. On models with manual transaxle, remove roll rod.
29. Remove engine mounting insulator bolts.
30. Remove engine mounting bracket from engine.
31. Slowly raise engine slightly to relieve pressure on mounting points and temporarily hold it in raised condition. Ensure all of cables, hoses, harnesses, connectors etc. are disconnected from engine.
32. Remove caps from inside right fender shield and remove transaxle mount bracket bolts.
33. Remove engine mount insulator bolt. While directing transaxle side downward, lift engine and transaxle assembly up and out of vehicles
34. Reverse procedure to install noting the following:
a. Ensure connections of harnesses, pipes and hoses aren't being caught or damaged, before installing engine.
b. When engine and transaxle assembly is installed temporarily tighten front roll stopper.
c. Front and rear center member rubber bushings and collars are different.
d. After weight of engine and transaxle assembly has been put on each insulator, tighten to specifications.
e. Refill coolant and check for leaks.
f. Refill transaxle fluid, test its operation, and check for leaks.
g. Check operation of transaxle control cable and accelerator cable. Adjust as necessary.
h. Check for proper operation of each of gauge.
