Valve Guide: Service and Repair

1. Check valve stem to guide clearance. If clearance exceeds service limit, replace with next oversize part as follows:
a. Press old valve guide from cylinder head toward cylinder block mating surface, using push rod of valve guide installer 09222-21200 or equivalent.
b. Machine valve guide bore in cylinder head to .4744-.4751 inch for valve guides marked ``5'' (.002 inch), .4822-.4829 inch for valve guides marked ``25'' (.010 inch) or .4921-.4928 inch for valve guides marked ``50'' (.020 inch).

c. Press fit new valve guide into rocker arm side of cylinder head using valve guide installer, Fig. 15. Valve guide installer installs valve guide to a pre-determined height. If this tool is not available, ensure distance between cylinder head and top of guide is .579-.602 inch.
d. After installation of new guides, install valves and ensure ease of movement, then check for correct valve contact and seating. Recondition valve seats, if necessary.
