Pick-Up Coil: Testing and Inspection

Igniter, Signal Rotor, and Air Gap Overview:

VOLTAGE TEST

The Igniter is located inside the distributor and mounted on the breaker plate.
It is connected by two wires, one is power and the other the control signal.

Testing is done by removing the distributor cap, locating the power connection and then checking the control signal.

1. Turn on the ignition. Using a test light, locate the igniter power connection by probing the terminals until the test light is lit.

If no power can be found, refer to CHASSIS ELECTRICAL for wiring diagrams, and trace the power circuit back to the ignition switch, checking for power.

2. Connect a voltmeter between the remaining connector and ground.
3. Crank the engine, and observe the readings on the voltmeter. There should be a pulsating voltage signal.

If the Igniter fails the previous tests, it should be replaced.

AIR GAP TEST

1. Remove distributor cap and rotor.
2. Turn the distributor until the pole of the pick-up coil is aligned with one of the points of the reluctor (signal rotor).
3. Using a non-metallic feeler gauge, check the clearance between the pick-up coil and the reluctor point.

AIR GAP: 0.8mm (.030in.)

4. If not as specified, refer to ADJUSTMENT PROCEDURES for proper adjustment procedure.
