Brake Shoe: Service and Repair
RemovalFig. 1 Exploded View Of Drum Brake Assembly:
1. Raise and support vehicle, then remove wheel/tire assembly.
2. Remove brake drum, then automatic adjuster spring and lever.
3. Remove shoe-to-shoe spring and hold-down spring, Fig. 1.
4. Remove parking brake cable from parking brake lever.
5. Remove clip from parking brake cable at backing plate, then brake line from wheel cylinder.
6. Remove wheel cylinder assembly with backing plate.
Inspection
1. Check backing plate for wear or damage. Replace as necessary.
2. Check wheel cylinder for fluid leakage. Repair or replace cylinder as necessary.
3. Inspect brake lining and drum for proper contact. Replace drum or shoe as necessary.
4. Measure inside diameter of brake drum. If I.D. is greater than 7.165 inches, drum is beyond wear limit and should be replaced.
Installation
1. Apply suitable grease to backing plate shoe contact surfaces.
2. Connect parking brake cable to parking brake lever, then install clip to backing plate.
3. Install shoe hold down spring, then position two shoes and attach the shoe to shoe spring.
4. Install adjuster strut assembly between leading shoe slot and slot in trailing shoe and parking brake lever.
5. Assemble adjuster lever in groove located in adjuster pin and into slot of the adjuster socket. Ensure pivot nut installed with groove on left side of blade facing outward.
6. Connect adjuster spring, then install backing plate and tighten bolts.
7. Install brake drum and wheel/tire assembly.
