Automatic Transmission/Transaxle: Adjustments

Fig. 1 Adjusting selector lever:

SELECTOR LEVER

1. Position selector lever in Neutral detent.
2. Remove handle retaining screw and handle from selector lever.
3. Turn adjusting sleeve so that clearance between sleeve and selector lever end is .677-.705 inch, Fig. 1.
4. Reinstall handle and retaining screw, then check that push button travel in all detents is .007-.063 inch.

Fig. 2 Adjusting throttle control cable:

THROTTLE CONTROL CABLE

1. Start engine and allow to reach normal operating temperature. Ensure that choke is fully open and that throttle lever is in curb idle position.
2. Raise cover ``B'' of throttle cable upward to expose nipple, Fig. 2.
3. Loosen lower cable bracket mounting bolt, then move bracket until clearance between nipple and top of cover ``A'' is .02-.06 inch. Torque mounting bolt to 9-11 ft. lbs.
4. Position throttle in wide open position, then pull cable upward and check for freedom of movement.

Fig. 3 Line pressure port location:

LINE PRESSURE

1. Set parking brake, block drive wheels, then position selector lever in Neutral.
2. Attach oil pressure gauge and adapter 09452-21000 or equivalent, to line pressure take-off port, Fig. 3.
3. Start engine and allow to reach normal operating temperature.
4. Position selector lever in Drive, accelerate engine to 2500 RPM, then place throttle control cable in wide open position and observe pressure gauge.
5. Line pressure should be 98-100 psi. If pressure is not as specified, proceed as follows:
a. Raise and support vehicle, then remove oil pan, filter and filter plate.
b. Disconnect throttle control cable from throttle cam.
c. Remove valve body attaching bolts and valve body. Use caution to prevent dropping valve body or accumulator springs.
d. Adjust line pressure by turning adjusting screw at regulator valve clockwise (decrease pressure) or counterclockwise (increase pressure) as required. One complete turn of screw will change line pressure approximately 4 psi.
e. Ensure O-rings are correctly positioned on top of valve body, then install accumulator springs.
f. Install valve body assembly, ensuring groove of manual valve fits onto manual control shaft detent plate pin. Torque attaching bolts to 8 ft. lbs.
g. Install oil filter. Torque flange bolts to 4-5 ft. lbs.
h. Reconnect throttle control cable to throttle cam.
i. Install oil pan using new gasket, then torque attaching bolts to 8 ft. lbs.
j. Refill transaxle.

KICKDOWN BAND

1. Wipe dirt from servo cover, then remove snap ring and cover.
2. Loosen locknut, then while preventing servo piston from turning, torque adjusting screw to 7 ft. lbs.
3. Loosen adjusting screw, then repeat step 2.
4. Loosen adjusting screw, retorque to 3.5 ft. lbs., then back off screw 3-1/2 to 3-3/4 turns.
5. While preventing adjusting screw from turning, torque locknut to 13 ft. lbs.
6. Install new seal ring into servo cover, then install cover and snap ring.
