Model: EXCEL
TROUBLESHOOTING HINT: ENGINE STALLS WHEN AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION IS SHIFTED INTO REVERSE GEAR
CONDITION: Engine stalls when automatic transmission is put into reverse.
CAUSE: Transmission fluid cooler circuit may be clogged, causing hydraulic feedback to the torque converter damper clutch. This can cause the damper clutch to lock-up and stall the engine.
DIAGNOSTIC
PROCEDURE: Bypass the cooler circuit by disconnecting both cooler hoses from the transmission and installing a new hose directly from the outlet port to the inlet port. If the engine now does not stall in reverse gear, the cooler circuit is probably clogged.
CORRECTION: Clean/Replace cooler hoses and/or transmission cooler as required.
CAUTION: Do not attempt to drive the vehicle with the bypass hose installed as severe transmission damage can result.
