ENGINE OVERHEATING (AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION MODELS ONLY)
Some 1987 Excels equipped with automatic transaxle (A/T) and air conditioning (A/C) may exhibit abnormally high coolant temperatures under severe operating conditions (heavy traffic, mountain roads, extensive idling) in high ambient temperature areas, generally 100~F or above.
This bulletin contains information regarding the proper diagnosis and corrective actions for this condition.
DIAGNOSIS
1. Visually inspect the vehicle for any non Hyundai approved accessories that may restrict air flow to the radiator, such as, grills with fog lights and aftermarket bras.
2. Confirm that the vehicle temperature gauge is operating above the normal range as shown in the 1987 owners manual (see below).
3. Check that the coolant is full in the radiator and to the full mark on the coolant recovery tank.
4. Test the coolant specific gravity to assure a 30%-60% mix of antifreeze to water.
5. Check that the cooling fan is operating and turning the proper direction. It should draw air through the front grill.
6. Pressure test the cooling system and the pressure cap. Both should hold 11-15 psi.
NOTE: A slow leak in the cap or system can cause aeration of the coolant and a loss of cooling efficiency.
7. Test the air conditioner pressures to assure they are within specification. An over charged air conditioner can cause overheating. The A/C manufacturer recommends using 1.7-1.9 lbs. of R12 refrigerant.
8. Test the thermostat for proper opening temperature. (190~F begin opening, .31 in. fully open at 212~F).
9. Check timing and idle speed adjustments.
If all of these items have been checked and the vehicle still operates above the normal range, proceed with installation of the cooling system kit.
REMOVAL PROCEDURE
NOTE: Before replacing any parts, remove the new front transverse filler assembly from the repair kit and have it painted the same body color of the vehicle to be repaired.
1. Record the preset radio stations and then disconnect the battery ground cable.
2. Loosen the radiator drain plug and drain the coolant from the radiator.
3. Remove the radiator grille. (See TSB016 in Body Section)
(FIGURE 1):
4. Remove the old front transverse filler assembly from the vehicle and discard. (Figure 1)
5. Disconnect the fan motor harness connector.
(FIGURE 2):
6. Disconnect the upper and lower radiator hoses from the engine. They can remain attached to the radiator. (Figure 2)
7. Disconnect the overflow tube from the radiator neck. (Figure 2)
8. Disconnect the A/T oil cooler hoses from the radiator. (Figure 2)
9. Remove the 4 radiator mounting bolts.
10. Remove the radiator and fan and motor assembly from the vehicle.
11. Remove the blower assembly from the radiator.
NOTE: Retain the 4 blower assembly attaching bolts, as they will be used to install the new blower assembly.
REASSEMBLY PROCEDURE
1. Install the new thermo-switch to the aluminum radiator.
2. Install the new blower motor assembly to the aluminum radiator.
3. Install the new radiator and fan with the four new bolts provided.
NOTE: One bolt is longer than the others. It is installed in the lower right hand position.
4. Connect the fan motor harness connector.
(FIGURE 3):
5. Install new upper and lower radiator hoses.
NOTE: The white paint marks should align with the locating lugs as shown. (Figure 3)
(FIGURE 4):
6. Install newly painted transverse filler panel.
(Figure 4)
(FIGURE 5):
7. Install radiator grille.
8. Install the air guide as shown. A = Spring Clips (provided) B = Grill Support Bolts (Figure 5)
(FIGURE 6):
9. Install the air deflector. A = Right hand condenser mounting bolt B = Sheet metal screws (provided) (Figure 6)
10. Fill cooling system and overflow tank with clean coolant mixture of 50% Antifreeze.
11. Reconnect battery cable. Reset radio station preset buttons to previously recorded frequencies.
12. Road test vehicle and assure that condition has been corrected.
