Front Wheel Drive Shaft Outer Joint Boot Replacement

J 35910 - Drive Axle Seal Clamp Pliers

Note: The outer Constant Velocity joint is not serviced separately. If the CV joint id found to have excessive wear or damage, replace the wheel drive shaft as an assembly.

Removal Procedure

1. Remove the wheel drive shaft from the vehicle. Refer to Wheel Drive Shaft Replacement (Service and Repair).

Note: The inner wheel drive shaft joint and boot must be removed to service the outer wheel drive shaft boot.

2. Remove the wheel drive shaft inner joint and boot assembly. Refer to Front Wheel Drive Shaft Inner Joint Boot Replacement (Front Wheel Drive Shaft Inner Joint Boot Replacement).





Note: DO NOT reuse the old boot clamps, discard and replace with NEW.

3. Using a pair of side cutters, remove and discard the inner (1) and the outer (3) boot clamps from the wheel drive shaft (4) and the CV joint housing (5).
4. Remove the wheel drive shaft boot (2) from the CV joint housing (5) and the wheel drive shaft (4).
5. Remove the old lubricant from the CV joint housing.

Note: The outer CV joint assembly and the inner tripod assembly of the wheel drive shaft are NOT service separately but as a complete assembly.

6. Inspect the outer CV joint. If the internal parts are found to be damaged or excessively worn, replace the wheel drive shaft as an assembly.

Installation Procedure




1. Install the wheel drive shaft boot and the clamps (1) on the wheel drive shaft (2).




2. Ensure that the boot (1) is properly seated in the groove (2) in the wheel drive shaft (3).




3. Using the J 35910 - pliers, breaker bar, ratchet and or torque wrench (1), close the clamp until the gap (3) measures 2.15 mm (0.085).




4. Place approximately half the container lubricant (2) inside the boot (1) and pack the CV joint (3) with the remaining lubricant.




5. Install the boot (2) and the clamp (3) on the outer CV joint (4).




6. Using the J 35910 - pliers, breaker bar (3), and the ratchet and or torque wrench (2), close the clamp (1) until the gap (a) measures 2.15 mm (0.085).
7. Move the CV joint in a circular motion 4 or 5 times to distribute the lubricant.
8. Remove any excess lubricant from the wheel drive shaft.
9. Install the wheel drive shaft inner joint and boot assembly. Refer to Front Wheel Drive Shaft Inner Joint Boot Replacement (Front Wheel Drive Shaft Inner Joint Boot Replacement)
10. Install the wheel drive shaft in the vehicle. Refer to Wheel Drive Shaft Replacement (Service and Repair).
