J-42640 - Steering Column Anti-rotation Pin
Removal Procedure
Caution: With wheels of the vehicle facing straight ahead, secure the steering wheel utilizing steering column anti-rotation pin, steering column lock, or a strap to prevent rotation. Locking of the steering column will prevent damage and a possible malfunction of the SIR system. The steering wheel must be secured in position before disconnecting the following components:
* The steering column
* The intermediate shaft(s)
* The steering gear
After disconnecting these components, do not rotate the steering wheel or move the front tires and wheels. Failure to follow this procedure may cause the SIR coil assembly to become un-centered and cause possible damage to the SIR coil. If you think the SIR coil has became un-centered, refer to your specific SIR coil's centering procedure to re-center SIR Coil.
1. Ensure the front wheels are in the straight ahead position.
2. Use the J-42640 - pin in order to lock the steering column.
3. Remove the engine shield, if equipped. Refer to Engine Shield Replacement (Engine Shield Replacement).
4. Disconnect the rack and pinion outer tie rod ends from the steering knuckles. Refer to Steering Linkage Outer Tie Rod Replacement (Steering Linkage Outer Tie Rod Replacement).
5. Remove as much power steering fluid from the reservoir as possible.
6. Place drain pans under the vehicle.
7. Disconnect the power steering gear inlet and outlet hose from the steering gear. Refer to Power Steering Gear Inlet and Outlet Hose Replacement (LH9) (Service and Repair)Power Steering Gear Inlet and Outlet Hose Replacement (LLR) (Service and Repair).
8. Disconnect the lower intermediate steering shaft from the steering gear. Refer to Lower Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement (Lower Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement).
9. Remove the vertical steering gear nut, washer, and bolt.
10. Remove the horizontal steering gear nut, washer, and bolt.
11. Remove the steering gear bracket bolts and the bracket.
12. If equipped with right hand drive, perform the following steps:
1. Support the front differential with a jack.
2. Secure the front differential with straps.
3. Remove the front differential mounting bolts.
Note: Avoid overextending or binding the CV joints. Avoid contacting the boots or the clamps on the front wheel drive shafts.
4. Reposition the front differential rearward in order to obtain clearance for the steering gear.
13. Remove the steering gear from the vehicle.
