Bulletin No.: 08-08-59-003

Date: October 08, 2008

Subject:
Rattle / Buzz Noise From Behind Radio at Idle and/or While Shifting Vehicle Into Gear (Reposition Heater Hose Bracket and Install Strap)

Models:
2008-2009 HUMMER H3
2009 HUMMER H3T

with 5.3L Engine (VIN L - RPO LH8)

Condition

Some customers may comment on a rattle or buzz type noise that is heard from behind the radio at idle, usually in the 700 to 900 RPM range. Other customers may comment that the noise is present when shifting the vehicle into gear.

This noise may be reproduced typically with the engine idling and slowly sweep through the 700-900 RPM range or by brake torquing the vehicle in (Forward or Reverse) gear.

Cause

The heater hose bracket may not be properly orientated and the heater core pipes may set up a resonance causing the noise.

Correction

Reposition the heater hose bracket and install a nylon tie strap around the heater core pipes using the steps below.

1. Open the hood.

2. Remove the engine cover. Refer to Upper Intake Manifold Sight Shield Replacement in SI.

3. Locate the heater hose bracket on the front of the cylinder head.

4. Loosen the heater hose bracket bolt. Left Hand Drive Heater Hose Bracket Orientation Shown

5. Rotate the heater hose bracket (1) inboard until the anti-rotation tab (2) is bottomed out against the engine assembly.

6. Tighten the heater hose bracket bolt.

Tighten

Tighten the bracket bolt to 25 Nm (18 lb ft).

Note:
DO NOT over bend the pipes when tightening the nylon strap (1). The strap (1) is sufficiently tightened when the pipes begin to pull together.

7. Install a nylon tie strap (1), P/N 11569748 or equivalent around both heater core pipes and tighten the strap.

8. Cut off the excessive tie strap material and discard.

9. Install the engine cover.

10. Close the hood.
