Subject: Hard Tonneau Cover Does Not Remain Latched (Verify Latch and Cable Adjustments)
Models:
2005-2009 HUMMER H2 SUT
Attention:
This bulletin only applies to vehicles with tonneau P/N 12499433
Condition
Some customers may comment that the hard tonneau cover does not remain latched.
Cause
This condition may be caused by the tonneau cover not being properly adjusted.
Correction
The tonneau cover locks are built with adjustments to account for potential vehicle build variation. Use the following guidelines to verify that the tonneau cover is properly adjusted:
Tip
Diagnosis and adjustment of the latch cables may require removal of the cable channel cover to access. The cable channel cover is secured by push-in fasteners that can be removed using a trim tool to pry the fastener out. Service kit P/N 17801644 is available to replace the entire cable channel cover and push-in fasteners, if necessary.
Verify that the latch cables are not too loose
1. With the tonneau cover open, manually close both of the latches.
2. Turn the release handle. The latches should both release after 1/2 to 3/4 rotation of the handle. If the latches do not release, loosen the hex barrel (shown above) to relieve tension in the cable.
Verify that the latch cables are not too tight
1. With the tonneau cover open, manually close both of the latches.
2. Turn the release handle. The latches should both release after 1/2 to 3/4 rotation of the handle. If the latches are not releasing simultaneously, loosen the jam nut (shown above) of the latch that is releasing second, and then retighten the hex barrel. Repeat as necessary until the latches release simultaneously.
Verify the latch is striking the pin correctly from side to side
1. Stand at the rear of the vehicle on the driver's side.
2. Slowly lower the tonneau cover panel and observe the position of the latch onto the pin. The outside edge of the latch should not be contacting the pin washer or the mounting bracket. If the outside edge of the latch is contacting the pin, proceed with the following steps:
1. Loosen the two hex nuts securing the latch to the panel.
2. Slide the latch inboard to create a minimum clearance of 3.175 mm (1/8 in).
3. Retighten the two hex nuts.
4. Repeat steps 1 and 2, above, to verify that the cable is adjusted properly.
3. Stand at the rear passenger side of the vehicle, repeat step 2 and complete any necessary adjustment.
Verify that the tonneau is adjusted properly front to rear
1. Verify the front bracket is flush to the opening in the side rail.
2. Stand on the driver's side of the vehicle, near the rear, to see the latch.
3. Slowly lower the tonneau cover. The catch (shown above) of the latch should have a 0.063 mm (1/16 in) clearance from the bottom corner of the catch ("c" shaped) to the striker pin.
- If the catch is contacting the pin, adjust the latch forward and inspect the cable tension.
- If the catch is too far from the pin adjust the latch rearward and inspect the cable tension.
