Interior Trim Removal/Installation - Pillar Areas

A-Pillar Trim
SRS components are located in this area. Review the SRS component locations, 2-door SRS Component Location Index (2-Door), 4-door SRS Component Location Index (2-Door) and the precautions and procedures Service and Repair before doing repairs or service.
NOTE:
- If side airbags and/or side curtain airbags have deployed, the affected pillar area trim and attachment clips must be replaced. Refer to Component Replacement/Inspection After Deployment Service and Repair.
- Put on gloves to protect your hands.
- Take care not to scratch the trim or the panels.
- Use the appropriate tool from the KTC trim tool set to avoid damage when removing components.
- The upper clip (A) in the A-pillar trim (B) consists of a plastic grommet (C) and a metal pin (D). The grommet expands when the pin secures it to the body panel (E). The projections (F) on the pin break during removal, so the upper clip must be replaced with a new one when the trim is reinstalled.
1. Pull the door opening seal away from the A-pillar as needed:
- 2-door
- 4-door
2. Hit the upper clip (A) in the A-pillar trim (B) with a rubber mallet. The clip is under the "SIDE CURTAIN AIRBAG" mark (C). Hitting the clip breaks the projections (D) on the pin (E) and pushes it into the grommet (F) on the body (G).
NOTE: The upper clip must be replaced with a new one when the A-pillar trim is reinstalled.
3. Pull back the top of the A-pillar trim (A) by hand to remove the upper clip (B) from the body (C).
4. Pull out the A-pillar trim (A) by hand to detach the clips. Pull up the trim from the dashboard (B), then remove the trim.

5. If the side curtain airbag has deployed, replace the A-pillar trim, along with the other parts listed for side curtain airbag deployment Service and Repair.
6. If the side curtain airbag has not deployed, check the A-pillar trim (A) and note the following items:
- To prevent the side curtain airbags from deploying improperly and possibly causing injury, inspect the A-pillar trim and replace it with a new one if it has any of the following damage:
- Any cracks, deformations, or stress-whitened areas in the A-pillar trim
- Any cracks or stress-whitening in the clip seating surfaces (B)
- After checking and adjusting the overlap between the headliner and the A-pillar trim, replace the upper clip (C) with a new one.
- If the clips (D) are damaged or stress-whitened, replace them with new ones.
- 4-door A-pillar trim is shown; 2-door A-pillar trim is similar.
7. Temporarily install the A-pillar trim (without the upper clip) to check the overlap between the trim and the headliner. Remove the trim, and if necessary, adjust the overlap.
8. Carefully install the new upper clip (A) to the A-pillar trim (B). Be sure that the grommet (C) is nearest to the top of the pin (D) as shown.
9. Reinstall the A-pillar trim (A).
1. Insert the bottom of the trim into the dashboard (B).
2. Place the trim over the A-pillar (C), and fit the upper clip (D), the lower clips, and the pins (E) into the holes in the A-pillar, then lightly push the trim into place.
NOTE:
- Make sure the side curtain airbag is not tucked under the clips or the trim ribs.
- Do not push too hard on the A-pillar trim. If you push too hard, the clip will be damaged, and it will not hold the trim properly.
- Gently tug on the A-pillar trim to verify that all clips are securely fastened.

10. Reinstall the door opening seal:
- 2-door
- 4-door
B-Pillar Upper/Lower Trim - 4-door

NOTE:
- If side airbags and/or side curtain airbags have deployed, the affected pillar area trim and attachment clips must be replaced. Refer to Component Replacement/Inspection After Deployment Service and Repair.
- Put on gloves to protect your hands.
- Take care not to bend or scratch the trim or the panels.
- Use the appropriate tool from the KTC trim tool set to avoid damage when removing components.
1. Remove these items:
- Front door sill trim
- Rear door sill trim
- Front door opening seal, as needed
- Rear door opening seal, as needed
2. Slide the front seat forward fully.
3. Remove the B-pillar lower trim (A).
1. Pull back the upper area of the trim to release the hooks (B).
2. Detach the clips by pulling back the bottom of the trim by hand.
4. Remove the front seat belt lower anchor.
5. Pull back the bottom of the B-pillar upper trim (A) by hand to release the hooks (B).
6. Detach the clip by pulling the top of the B-pillar upper trim (A). Pull down the trim to release the upper hooks (B) from the side curtain airbag bracket (C).
7. Pass the front seat belt lower anchor (A) out through a hole in the slider (B), then remove the B-pillar upper trim (C).
8. Remove the slider (A) from the B-pillar upper trim (B).
9. Install the trim in the reverse order of removal, and note these items:
- If the side curtain airbag has deployed, replace the B-pillar upper trim (A), the B-pillar lower trim (B), and all clips (C), along with the other parts listed for side curtain airbag deployment Service and Repair.
- To prevent the side curtain airbags from deploying improperly and possibly causing injury, inspect the trim, and replace it with a new one if it has any of the following damage:
- Any cracks or deformations in the B-pillar upper trim or the upper hooks (D), or any stress-whitened areas in the upper part of the trim
- Any cracks or deformations in the B-pillar lower trim, or any breakages in the part (E) fitted with the B-pillar upper trim
- Any cracks or stress-whitening in the clip seating surfaces (F)
- If the clips are damaged or stress-whitened, replace them with new ones.
- Replace any damaged parts with new ones.
- Make sure the top of the B-pillar upper trim overlaps with the headliner correctly.
- Make sure the pin (G) on the front seat belt shoulder anchor adjuster (H) and the hole (I) on the back of the slider are engaged when installing the B-pillar upper trim.
- Make sure the upper hooks are installed into the side curtain airbag bracket securely.
- Push the clip, the hooks, and the pin into place securely.
- Before installing the anchor bolt, make sure there are no twists or kinks in the seat belt.

Quarter Pillar Trim - 2-door

NOTE:
- If side airbags and/or side curtain airbags have deployed, the affected pillar area trim and attachment clips must be replaced. Refer to Component Replacement/Inspection After Deployment Service and Repair.
- Put on gloves to protect your hands.
- Take care not to bend or scratch the trim or the panels.
- Use the appropriate tool from the KTC trim tool set to avoid damage when removing components.
- The B-pillar upper clip (A) in the quarter pillar trim (B) consists of a plastic grommet (C) and a metal pin (D). The grommet expanded by the pin secures it to the body panel (E). The projections (F) on the pin break during removal, so the upper clip must be replaced with a new one when the trim is reinstalled.
- The C-pillar upper clip (G) under the airbag lid (H) consists of a plastic grommet (I) and a metal pin (J). The groove (K) in the grommet secures it to the body panel. The shoulder (L) on the grommet break during removal, so the grommet must be replaced with a new one when the trim is reinstalled.
1. Remove these items:
- Rear shelf extension Interior Trim Removal/Installation - Rear Side Area (2-Door)
- Front seat belt upper anchor
2. Lower the coat hanger (A), pry off the lid (B) with the appropriate trim tool, then remove the screw.
3. Release the hooks (A), then remove the rear window harness cap (B) from the quarter pillar trim (C).
4. Pull away the door opening seal from the B-pillar as needed.
5. Hit the surface of the quarter pillar trim (A) just upon the B-pillar upper clip (B) with a rubber mallet. Hitting the trim surface breaks the projections (C) on the pin (D) and pushes it into the grommet (E) on the body (F).
NOTE: The upper clip must be replaced with a new one when the quarter pillar trim is reinstalled.
6. Hit the surface of the airbag lid (A) just upon the C-pillar upper clip (B) with a rubber mallet. The clip is halfway between the "SIDE CURTAIN AIRBAG" mark (C) and the rear window. Hitting the lid surface breaks the shoulder (D) on the grommet (E) and pushes the pin (F) and the grommet against the body (G).
NOTE:
- The upper clip must be replaced with a new one when the quarter pillar trim is reinstalled.
- Do not hit the lower side of the airbag lid, or you will damage it. It is very delicate part.
7. Remove the quarter pillar trim (A).
1. Detach the clips (B, C) and release the B-pillar upper clip (D) from the body (E).
2. Remove the pin (F) of the C-pillar upper clip from the grommet (G) remaining in the body by pulling back the trim.
3. Lower the trim to release the upper edge of it from the headliner (H).
8. Remove the grommet from the body.
NOTE: The grommet must be replaced with a new one because it is damaged during removal.
9. If the side curtain airbag has deployed, replace the quarter pillar trim, along with the other parts listed for side curtain airbag deployment Service and Repair.
10. If the side curtain airbag has not deployed, check the quarter pillar trim (A) and note the following items:
- To prevent the side curtain airbags from deploying improperly and possibly causing injury, inspect the quarter pillar trim and replace it with a new one if it has any of the following damage:
- Any cracks, deformations, or stress-whitened areas in the quarter pillar trim
- Any cracks or stress-whitening in the clip seating surfaces (B)
- Damage to the top of the pin (C) of the C-pillar upper clip
- If any of the clips (D, E) are damaged or stress-whitened, replace them with new ones.
- After checking and adjusting the overlap between the headliner and the quarter pillar trim, replace the B-pillar upper clip (F) with a new one.
11. Temporarily install the quarter pillar trim (without the B-pillar upper clip and the C-pillar upper clip) to check the overlap between the trim and the headliner. Remove the trim, and if necessary, adjust the overlap.
12. Carefully install the new upper clips (A, B) to the quarter pillar trim (C), and the grommet (D, E) on the place at the pin (F, G).
NOTE:
- B-pillar upper clip: Be sure that the grommet D is nearest to the top of the pin F as shown.
- C-pillar upper clip: Seat the pin G with the grommet E on the quarter pillar trim as shown.
13. Reinstall the quarter pillar trim (A).
1. Fit the upper edge of the trim to the headliner (B).
2. Place the trim over the B-pillar (C) and the C-pillar (D) and fit the B-pillar upper clip (E), the C-pillar upper clip (F), and all of the other clips (G, H) into the holes (I) in the body, then lightly push the trim into place.
NOTE:
- Make sure the side curtain airbag is not tucked under the clips or the trim ribs.
- Do not push too hard on the quarter pillar trim. If you push too hard, the clips will be damaged, and they will not hold the trim properly.
- Gently tug on the quarter pillar trim to verify that all clips are securely fastened.
14. Reinstall the rear window harness cap (A) to the quarter pillar trim (B) until its hooks (C) snap into place securely.
15. Reinstall the screw and the lid (A).
16. Reinstall the door opening seal.
C-Pillar Trim - 4-door
SRS components are located in this area. Review the SRS component locations SRS Component Location Index (2-Door) and the precautions and procedures Service and Repair before doing repairs or service.
NOTE:
- If side airbags and/or side curtain airbags have deployed, the affected pillar area trim and attachment clips must be replaced. Refer to Component Replacement/Inspection After Deployment Service and Repair.
- Put on gloves to protect your hands.
- Take care not to scratch the trim or the panels.
- Use the appropriate tool from the KTC trim tool set to avoid damage when removing components.
- The front clip (A) in the C-pillar trim (B) consists of a plastic grommet (C) and a metal pin (D). The grommet expanded by the pin secures it to the body panel (E). The projections (F) on the pin brake during removal, so the clip must be replaced with a new one when the trim is reinstalled.
1. Remove these items:
- Rear seat cushion
- Rear seat side bolster
- Rear door opening seal, as needed
2. Fold down the seat-backs.
3. Hit the front clip (A) in the C-pillar trim (B) with a rubber mallet. The clip is near the triangle mark (C). Hitting the clip breaks the projections (D) on the pin (E) and pushes it into the grommet (F) on the body (G).
NOTE: The front clip must be replaced with a new one when the C-pillar trim is reinstalled.
4. Pull back the front of the C-pillar trim (A) by hand to remove the front clip (B) from the body (C).
5. Pull back the C-pillar trim (A) by hand to detach the clips and release the hooks (B), then pull out the trim from the rear shelf (C).
6. If the side curtain airbag has deployed, replace the C-pillar trim, along with the other parts listed for side curtain airbag deployment Service and Repair.
7. If the side curtain airbag has not deployed, check the C-pillar trim (A) and note the following items:
- To prevent the side curtain airbags from deploying improperly and possibly causing injury, inspect the C-pillar trim and replace it with a new one if it has any of the following damage:
- Any cracks, deformations, or stress-whitening in the C-pillar trim
- Any cracks or stress-whitened areas in the clip seating surfaces (B)
- After checking and adjusting the overlap between the headliner and the C-pillar trim, replace the front clip (C) with a new one.
- If the clips (D) are damaged or stress-whitened, replace them with new ones.
8. Temporarily install the C-pillar trim (without the front clip) to check the overlap between the trim and the headliner Service and Repair. Remove the trim, and if necessary, adjust the overlap.
9. Carefully install the new front clip (A) to the C-pillar trim (B). Be sure that the grommet (C) is nearest to the top of the pin (D) as shown.
10. Reinstall the C-pillar trim (A).
1. Insert the hooks (B) of the trim into the rear shelf (C).
2. Place the trim over the C-pillar (D), and fit the front clip (E) and the clips into the holes in the C-pillar, then lightly push the trim into place.
NOTE:
- Make sure the side curtain airbag is not tucked under the clips or the ribs.
- Do not push too hard on the C-pillar trim. If you push too hard, the clip will be damaged, and it will not hold the trim properly.
- Gently tug on the C-pillar trim to verify that all clips are securely fastened.
11. Reinstall the rear door opening seal.
