Quarter Pillar Trim - 2-door
SRS components are located in this area. Review the SRS component locations SRS Component Location Index (2-Door) and the precautions and procedures Service and Repair before doing repairs or service.
NOTE:
- Follow the quarter pillar trim installation procedure carefully; improper installation could cause the side curtain airbags to deploy improperly and possibly cause injury.
- Put on gloves to protect your hands.
- Use the appropriate tool from the KTC trim tool set to avoid damage when removing components.
- Take care not to scratch the trim or the panels.
- The B-pillar upper clip (A) in the quarter pillar trim (B) consists of a plastic grommet (C) and a metal pin (D). The grommet expands when the pin secures it to the body panel (E). The projections (F) on the pin are broken during removal, so the upper clip must be replaced with a new one when the trim is reinstalled.
- The C-pillar upper clip (G) under the airbag lid (H) consists of a plastic grommet (I) and a metal pin (J). The groove (K) in the grommet secures it to the body panel. The shoulder (L) on the grommet is broken during removal, so the grommet must be replaced with a new one when the trim is reinstalled.
1. Remove these items:
- Rear shelf extension Interior Trim Removal/Installation - Rear Shelf Extension (2-Door)
- Front seat belt upper anchor Front Seat Belt Replacement
2. Lower the coat hanger (A), pry off the lid (B) with a trim tool, then remove the screw.
3. Release the hooks (A), then remove the rear window harness cap (B) from the quarter pillar trim (C).
4. Pull away the door opening seal from the B-pillar as needed. Service and Repair
5. Hit the surface of the quarter pillar trim (A) just upon the B-pillar upper clip (B) with a rubber mallet. Hitting the trim surface breaks the projections (C) on the pin (D) and pushes it into the grommet (E) on the body (F).
NOTE: The upper clip must be replaced with a new one when the quarter pillar trim is reinstalled.
6. Hit the surface of the airbag lid (A) just upon the C-pillar upper clip (B) with a rubber mallet. The clip is halfway between the "SIDE CURTAIN AIRBAG" mark (C) and the rear window. Hitting the lid surface breaks the shoulder (D) on the grommet (E) and pushes the pin (F) and the grommet against the body (G).
NOTE:
- The clip must be replaced with a new one when the quarter pillar trim is reinstalled.
- Do not hit the lower side of the airbag lid, or you will damage it. It is very delicate part.
7. Remove the quarter pillar trim (A).
-1 Detach the clips (B, C) and release the B-pillar upper clip (D) from the body (E).
Remove the pin (F) of the C-pillar upper clip from the grommet (G) remaining in the body by pulling back the trim.
-3 Lower the trim to release the upper edge of it from the headliner (H).
8. Remove the grommet from the body.
NOTE: The grommet must be replaced with a new one because it is damaged during removal.
9. If the side curtain airbag has deployed, replace the quarter pillar trim with new ones. Service and Repair
10. If the side curtain airbag has not deployed, check the quarter pillar trim (A) and note the following items:
- To prevent the side curtain airbags from deploying improperly and possibly causing injury, inspect the quarter pillar trim and replace it with a new one if it has any of these types of damage:
- Any cracks, deformations, or stress-whitened areas in the quarter pillar trim
- Any cracks or stress-whitened areas in the clip seating surfaces (B)
- Damage to the top of the C-pillar or the pin (C) of the C-pillar upper clip
- If any of the lower clips (D, E) are damaged or stress-whitened, replace them with new ones.
- Replace the B-pillar upper clip (F) with a new one.
11. Temporarily install the quarter pillar trim (without the B-pillar upper clip and the C-pillar upper clip) to check the overlap between the trim and the headliner. Service and Repair Remove the trim, and if necessary, adjust the overlap.
12. Carefully install the new upper clips (A, B) to the quarter pillar trim (C), and the grommet (D, E) on the place at the pin (F, G).
- B-pillar upper clip: Be sure that the grommet D is nearest to the top of the pin F as shown.
- C-pillar upper clip: Seat the pin G with the grommet E on the quarter pillar trim as shown.
13. Reinstall the quarter pillar trim (A).
Fit the upper edge of the trim to the headliner (B).
-2 Place the trim over the B-pillar (C) and the C-pillar (D) and fit the B-pillar upper clip (E), the C-pillar upper clip (F), and all of the other clips (G, H) into the holes (I) in the body, then lightly push the trim into place.
NOTE:
Make sure the side curtain airbag is not tucked under the clips or the trim ribs.
Do not push too hard on the quarter pillar trim. If you push too hard, the clips will be damaged, and they will not hold the trim properly.
Gently tug on the quarter pillar trim to verify that all clips are securely fastened.
14. Reinstall the rear window harness cap (A) to the quarter pillar trim (B) until its hooks (C) snap into place securely.
15. Reinstall the screw and the lid (A).
16. Reinstall the door opening seal.
